This contemporary extension and remodel of a traditional Victorian property was
designed to break down existing barriers to natural light and create a closer union
between the house and its gardens.
To the ground floor, the traditional conservatory underwent complete renovation.
The angular construction and full height glazing of the 300 ft sun lounge contrast
dramatically with the original house. The warm timber cladding roots the extension
firmly in its natural surroundings and wide timber sliding doors link it seamlessly
into the gardens. This is a modern yet timeless extension, created using materials
that will age well.
The winged, metal-finish roof was designed to protect the glazed south-facing extension
from overheating in summer, and allow enough sunlight to warm this part of the house
in winter. In the heart of the house, the remodelled dining room, utility room and
kitchen also benefit from enhanced natural lighting.
At the first floor, the master bedroom was remodelled with an en-suite wet room
and dressing area. Large windows and a glazed balcony were used to create light
and space and provide expansive views over the rear garden, while an overhanging
roof shades this floor from direct sunlight.
