The Coach House, Grappenhall
This Victorian Coach House was extended and renovated to create a home for our clients
in the grounds of their daughter’s large detached house in Grappenhall, Cheshire.
The Coach House stands in a conservation area and is surrounded by extensive gardens.
Our objective was therefore to create a design which was sensitive to the original
building’s historic setting and preserved its massing and character, but which
incorporated contemporary features suited to modern living.
The completed project provides a master bedroom with en suite, second bedroom and
separate bathroom on the first floor. On the ground floor we created a central entrance
hall, linking the sitting room with the combined kitchen and living area. A large
rooflight and full height glazing onto the gardens ensures the extension benefits
from plenty of natural light.
Authenticity of building materials was crucial to the success of the project. Bricks
were sourced to match the size and colouring of existing ones and the roof was finished
in Westmorland slates, laid in diminishing courses. Internally, floors were laid
in solid oak, above an integrated underfloor heating system.
